It was considered dishonorable for a girl to elope. But for royalty, it was not only dishonorable, it was inconceivable, unthinkable. A princess was a reflection of her entire kingdom, and doing something so preposterous would certainly come back to haunt her as well as those who followed her. She was a jewel in the eyes of her people, but a fragile one that many were tempted to break as soon as the chance came about. Despite how well the secret was kept, word would get out eventually of the marriage of a princess, and it would be her downfall and would lead to the destruction of her kingdom.
